Planet V is a hypothetical planet that orbited the Sun just beyond the orbit of Mars. Therefore, gravitational perturbations would have sent Planet V into the asteroid belt. The same would have thrown asteroids in the direction of the orbit of the inner planets. This process would have occurred until possibly Planet V fell into the Sun.
