C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), also known as the "Great Comet of 1997", is a long-period comet that was discovered independently by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp in July 1995. It reached its maximum brightness at magnitude –1.8 on April 1997, and was visible to the naked eye for nearly 18 months. It is one of the most famous comets of the 20th century, and it won't return to the inner Solar System until at least 4385. Its nucleus is large, with an estimated diameter of 60±20 km.
