HD 221650, also known as Z Andromedae, is a symbiotic binary star system about 6,700 light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It consists of an M4.5 giant and a hot white dwarf in a 759-day orbit. The system is the prototype of Z Andromedae variables, with its brightness varying between magnitudes 7.7 and 11.3. The red giant has a mass of about 2 M☉ and a luminosity of about 880 L☉, while the white dwarf has a temperature of about 150,000 K and a spin period of 1,682 seconds. The system exhibits a 7,550-day quasi-periodic outburst cycle, with six events recorded so far, and a 658.4-day modulation during outbursts attributed to a solar-type magnetic dynamo in the giant star.
