Mariner 4 is a NASA spacecraft that became the first artificial object to reach the planet Mars. It flew by the Red Planet at a distance of 9,846 km on 1965-Jul-15. Afterwards it studied the interplanetary medium before ceasing operations in 1967, possibly damaged during an encounter with a dead comet called D/1895 Q1 (Swift)
