Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, Sirius is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. It is a binary star system consisting of an A-type main-sequence star and a white dwarf orbiting each other once every 50 years. It is only about 8.61 light-years away in the constellation Canis Major
