SIMP J013656.5+093347.3, also known as SIMP0136, is a free-floating planetary-mass object about 20 light-years away in the constellation Pisces . With a mass of approximately 13 times that of Jupiter and a spectral type of T2.5, it belongs to the ambiguous category between gas giant planets and brown dwarfs . The object rotates rapidly with a period of about 2.4 hours, driving a surprisingly complex atmosphere that includes low-altitude iron clouds, high-altitude forsterite (silicate) clouds, and auroral emissions . JWST observations in 2024-2025 revealed that its atmospheric variability arises from three distinct mechanisms: patchy clouds, hot spots, and changing carbon chemistry, with none dominating across all wavelengths . The object has a proper motion of 1.24 arcseconds per year, drifting across the sky at a remarkable speed .
