HD 33142, also known as HIP 23844, is a single K-type giant star about 394 light-years away in the constellation Lepus. The star has a mass of 1.52 M☉, a radius of 4.17 R☉, and is approximately 2.72 billion years old. A system of three giant planets was discovered orbiting this evolved star via the radial velocity method between 2011 and 2022. The planets have minimum masses of approximately 1.26, 0.89, and 0.20 times that of Jupiter, with orbital periods of 330.0 days, 810.2 days, and 89.9 days, respectively. The system is dynamically packed: in one-third of orbital stability simulations, the system became unstable within a million years, with a median survival time of just 8,500 years for unstable configurations. As the star continues to evolve along the red giant branch, the two inner planets (d and b) will be engulfed before the tip of the red giant branch, while the outermost planet c may survive the red giant branch and migrate outward to ~2.5 AU, but will likely be engulfed during the asymptotic giant branch phase or ejected from the system entirely.
