433 Eros is a large stony asteroid of the Amor group. Discovered in 1898, it is the first near-Earth asteroid ever discovered, and also the second-largest known at 16.8 km (10.4 mi) in diameter. It was extensively studied by NASA's NEAR–Shoemaker mission between 1999 and 2001, becoming the first spacecraft to orbit (and land) on an asteroid
