The Galileo Navigational Satellite System (GNSS) is the European equivalent to the US Global Positioning System (GPS). Its constellation of 28 satellites (22 active, 6 derelict) provide Europe with high-precision geodesic navigation without relying much on GPS and GLONASS satellites. First launch occurred in December 2005
NOTE: Not to be confused with NASA's Galileo mission, which studied Jupiter and its moons from 1995 to 2003
