Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous – Shoemaker (NEAR–Shoemaker), renamed after its 1996 launch in honor of planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, was a NASA space probe that studied the asteroid 433 Eros from orbit between 2000 and 2001. It was the first spacecraft to successfully orbit and land on an asteroid.
