Space Station Freedom was a NASA project to construct a permanently crewed Earth-orbiting space station in the 1980s. Although approved by then-US president Ronald Reagan himself, Freedom was never constructed nor completed as originally designed. In 1993, after several cutbacks, the project was merged with the Soviet/Russian Mir-2 to form what became the International Space Station program we know today.
