Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt and the largest known trans-Neptunian object. Discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh, it was considered the ninth planet for 76 years until its demotion to dwarf planet status in 2006. Its largest natural satellite, Charon, was discovered in 1978. The Pluto-Charon system was visited by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft in July 2015.
