After the success of its predecessor, Mariner 5 was repurposed and redesigned for a Venus mission in 1967. It flew by the planet on 1967-Oct-19 at a distance of 3,440 km from the surface. Notably, this mission along with Venera 4 (which arrived on Venus just a day earlier), performed the first joint space mission between the Soviet Union and the United States
