40 Eridani is the real-world designation of the star system where the Vulcans' homeworld is located. It is one of the founding members of the United Federation of Planets. In an alternate timeline, Vulcan was destroyed in 2258 after Nero planted an artificial black hole onto the planet's core as revenge against Spock's failure to save Romulus in 2387
